Small Winery, Big Commitment to the Land

At Ramona Ranch Winery, sustainability isn’t a buzzword — it’s a guiding principle in how we farm, produce wine, and welcome guests to our tasting room. As a Certified Sustainable Winery through the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA), we are always looking for thoughtful ways to reduce our environmental impact while improving efficiency and preserving the land that grows our grapes.

From solar power to energy-efficient building design, many of the choices we’ve made behind the scenes help us operate more responsibly — and this month we had a moment worth celebrating.

Our March energy bill showed a credit of –$116.

That means our solar system produced more energy than we used. For a small, family-run winery, that’s a sustainability success we’re proud of.

Solar Power: Clean Energy for Winemaking

Wine production can require significant energy for lighting, equipment, and maintaining stable temperatures for aging wines. That’s why we invested in solar power, allowing us to run much of our winery operations using renewable energy generated right here on-site.

Solar power helps us:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Lower long-term operating costs
  • Produce wine with a smaller environmental footprint

Seeing our solar panels generate more power than we used this month is a great reminder that sustainable investments truly pay off.

Building an Energy-Efficient Winery

When we built our production facility and tasting room in 2022, sustainability and efficiency were central to the design.

Our facility includes:

  • High-performance insulation that helps maintain stable temperatures year-round
  • Energy-conscious building design to reduce heating and cooling demands
  • On-site wine storage for temperature-controlled aging

By storing and aging our wines here at the winery, we reduce transportation needs and maintain ideal cellar conditions while minimizing energy consumption.

Smart Lighting That Saves Energy

You may not notice it when you visit, but both our production facility and tasting room use motion-sensor lighting.

This simple technology plays an important role in energy conservation. Lights automatically turn on when someone enters a space and turn off when it’s empty.

Why does this matter?

  • It reduces unnecessary electricity use
  • It lowers overall energy demand in large workspaces
  • It extends the lifespan of lighting systems

Sometimes the smallest upgrades can make a meaningful difference.

Cleaner Equipment in the Winery

Moving barrels and pallets of wine is part of daily life in a winery. Instead of using propane or gas-powered equipment, we operate an electric forklift in our production space, pictured above with winemaker and co-owner, Micole Moore.

The benefits are significant:

  • Zero on-site emissions
  • Quieter operation in the winery
  • Improved indoor air quality for staff and visitors
  • Lower operating costs

It’s another step toward reducing our environmental footprint while maintaining an efficient winery operation.

Sustainability Is Part of Who We Are

As a family-owned winery in the Ramona Valley, we believe sustainability is about stewardship — caring for the land, the vines, and the community that surrounds us.

From solar energy and efficient building design to electric equipment and smart lighting, these investments help us produce wine responsibly while preserving the beauty of Ramona’s wine country.

Sometimes sustainability is about large initiatives, and sometimes it’s about many small decisions that add up over time.

For us, the result is simple:

Clean energy. Efficient operations. Great wine.

And this month, our solar panels reminded us that those choices matter.

“Sustainability you can see, taste, and trust.”

We’ll raise a glass to that. 🌞🍷
